THE PEAK OF MILANGKALA TATAR SUNDA CULTURAL PARADE:
WHEN ANCESTRAL HERITAGE ENCHANTS THE HEART OF BANDUNG CITY

The festive peak of the Milangkala Tatar Sunda Cultural Parade in the heart of Bandung City. Witness the captivating charm of ancestral heritage and the exoticism of Sundanese culture!

The main streets in the center of Bandung City suddenly transformed into a sea of people on Saturday night, May 16, 2026. Thousands of eyes, from children to the elderly, packed the sidewalks to witness the peak night of the 9th Milangkala Tatar Sunda Cultural Parade. This grand annual event is not merely a spectacle but a magnificent reflection of the existence, resilience, and beauty of Sundanese culture amidst the currents of modern times.

This year, the celebration carries a theme rich with philosophical meaning: "Mahkota Ajeg Ki Sunda" (The Steadfast Crown of Ki Sunda). This theme, literally and meaningfully, describes the resilience, independence, and dignity of the Sundanese people who remain steadfast (ajeg) based on the noble values of mutual love, mutual sharpening, and mutual care.

The event, which lasted from afternoon until close to midnight, was led directly by West Java Governor, Dedi Mulyadi, and attended by the regional leadership communication forum (Forkopimda), traditional leaders, cultural experts, and delegations from various provinces in Indonesia.

Sacredness of the Golden Chariot and Binokasih Crown

Exactly at 7:30 PM WIB, the atmosphere around the parade's starting line became solemn. The magical sound of tarawangsa blowing and goong booming marked the beginning of the main procession. Golden spotlights immediately focused on the star of the night: the Golden Chariot carrying a replica of the Binokasih Sanghyang Pake Crown.

The Binokasih Crown, which historically was the symbol of the Pajajaran kingdom's crown handed over to Prabu Geusan Ulun of Sumedang Larang, was paraded with strict escort from horseback riders dressed in traditional Sundanese warrior attire. The presence of this golden chariot brought a strong sacred aura, leaving most of the audience awestruck and paying deep respect as the chariot passed.

West Java Governor, Dedi Mulyadi, who walked at the front of the line wearing complete traditional Sundanese attire—white pangsi shirt, sinjang cloth, and a distinctive head wrap—stated that this procession is a symbol of the return of West Java society's true identity.

"Tonight, through the symbolization of the Mahkota Ajeg Ki Sunda, we are not celebrating the past. We are asserting the future. Sundanese culture is not a fossil merely kept in a museum to be remembered, but a living energy that must be cared for, enlivened, and passed down to our children and grandchildren so that they do not lose direction in the era of globalization," said Dedi Mulyadi in his opening remarks.

Cultural Showcase of 27 Regencies and Cities

One of the main attractions of this 9th Milangkala Tatar Sunda Cultural Parade is the full involvement of all administrative constituents in West Java. A total of 27 regencies and cities sent their best contingents, bringing a wealth of folklore, mythology, and distinctive regional arts that might have rarely been highlighted on the national stage.

Along the parade route, stretching from the Kiara Artha Park area to Gedung Sate, spectators were treated to an extraordinarily rich visual parade.

Some of the traditional arts that stole the show included:

Rengkong Art: An agrarian tradition representing gratitude for the rice harvest. The distinctive sound of rice-carrying bamboos resonated among the tall buildings, bringing an idyllic rural ambiance to the metropolitan city.

Ngarak Cai Procession: Representatives from upstream river areas carried pitchers filled with sacred water from ancient spring sources in the Pasundan region. This is a strong ecological message about the importance of preserving nature and water as the source of life.

Surak Ibra: An art form from Garut full of acrobatic acts and heroism. The dancers threw their colleagues into the air with incredible synchronization, depicting the spirit of popular resistance against injustice in the past. This performance successfully sparked thunderous applause and awe from the audience.

Each contingent performed with full dedication, featuring magnificent costumes, detailed makeup, and dynamic street choreography. The use of live music instruments such as kendang, suling, and angklung made the parade feel very vibrant compared to merely using audio recordings.

Nusantara Harmony in Pasundan Land

Although the main theme of this event is the celebration of Sundanese culture, the organizing committee showed high openness and inclusivity. This was evidenced by the presence of various art forms from other provinces in Indonesia, who were also invited to enliven the parade. This step seems to affirm that Tatar Sunda is a welcoming home for the diversity of Nusantara culture.

The vibrant colors of Indonesian culture were clearly visible as groups of Jakarta's iconic Ondel-ondel comically interacted with children on the roadside. Not long after, the atmosphere became boisterous as the Reog Ponorogo contingent from East Java showed off. The actions of the "pembarong" who lifted dozens of kilograms of peacock's head using the strength of their teeth successfully made the audience hold their breath.

The elegance of the parade was further enhanced by the performance of Tari Ratoh Jaroe from Aceh. The fast, compact, and rhythmic hand movements of the female dancers on stage created visual harmony symbolizing steadfast faith and togetherness. The presence of these inter-regional arts is clear evidence that the peak night of Milangkala Tatar Sunda has transformed into a national-scale cultural festival that strengthens the bonds of national unity.

Public Enthusiasm and Economic Impact

The liveliness of this event is inseparable from the extraordinary participation of the community. Since 3:00 PM WIB, residents from various areas within and outside Bandung had already begun to stake out the best positions along the parade route.

Siti Aminah (34), a resident from Majalengka, deliberately came with her small family by train to witness this event. "Children nowadays know more about foreign cultures from their gadgets. I brought them here so they could see firsthand that our own culture is far more magnificent, more beautiful, and has great stories," she said with sparkling eyes.

On the other hand, this cultural parade also provided a very significant instant economic impact for the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) sector and Bandung City tourism. Hotel occupancy rates around the city center were reported to reach almost 95 percent during this weekend. Hundreds of traditional culinary vendors, handicraft sellers, and distinctive Sundanese souvenir stalls facilitated along the roadside bazaar area reaped manifold profits.

Keeping the Flame of Tradition Alive

As the clock struck 11:30 PM WIB, the cultural parade concluded with a fireworks display gracing the sky above Gedung Sate, combined with a colossal rampak kendang performance played by hundreds of youths. The peak night of the 9th Milangkala Tatar Sunda Cultural Parade successfully left a deep impression.

Through the theme "Mahkota Ajeg Ki Sunda," West Java has sent a strong message to the outside world. Amidst the onslaught of 21st-century modernity, the Sundanese people have proven not to have lost their cultural compass. This event is not merely an annual ceremony but a collective vow that as long as the land of Pasundan exists, the language, customs, arts, and honor of Ki Sunda will remain steadfast, firm, and eternal forever.
